Apple’s new Lightning connector features 8 pins per side; the large metal housing acts as the grounding 9th “pin”. The connector is reversible: it can be plugged in with either side facing up. The connector is also pin-reassignable: the pins are dynamically reassigned signals depending on which way the connector is inserted and also depending on which type of device is being used. The Lightning connector also features an embedded chipset which may control pin-assignments and authenticate devices.
